This pattern features the map of Palestine with a watermelon design and the word Palestine in Arabic script.
The watermelon is an important symbol of Palestinian resistance. Following the Arab-israeli war in 1967, public displays of the Palestinian flag were outlawed in occupied Palestine. Anyone who displayed the flag or its colors could face arrest.
Palestinian artist Sliman Mansour says the watermelon’s link to the Palestinian flag began in the 1980s, when Israeli officials banned any art using its colors. When they asked about painting a flower in those colors, an officer replied, “Even if you paint a watermelon, we will confiscate it.”
